What "Anarchismo" is and how it functions

In 1972 the group working in Catania around the bookshop and publishing group ‘Libreria Underground’ began the publication of a newspaper Sinistra Libertaria which was to become a periodical but which was immediately condemned by the hostility and incomprehension of certain comrades, and by the police and judicial repression.
With the intention of continuing this endeavour, the first number of Anarchismo, a bimonthly review, was published in 1975, an instrument for the clarficiation of essential theoretical problems arising from certain concrete situations. The aim of the editorial group is that of maintaining the review at a sufficiently high level of analysis, while avoiding falling into theory for the sake of theory, and of building a coherent discourse capable of bringing out the true matrix of anarchism, which is not merely a negative vacuum, but is analytical penetration for the struggle, a precise direction of thought maintained constant even when it might be disagreeable.
The work in these last two years of activity has been addressed towards a study of the problem of anarchist organisation and the critical re-examination of past structures which often turn out to be inadequate for the present time, against any authoritarian contamination these structures might assume, derived from platformist positions in turn produced from the disillusionment of a certain historical moment and not valid in absolute; a critical examination of anarcho-syndicalist formulae and a more profound study of the authoritarian inconvenience they can determine; towards workers’ autonomy, constructing beginning from the base on the foundation of self-management of the struggle and of production (when possible); for direct action in the struggle in the factories, on the land, the universities and living areas, as well as in the sense of the armed defence of these struggles.
Furthermore, we have attempted to carry out an open-minded research of the experience of others, Also Marxists, because we are sure of the validity of an anarchist libertarian methodology which rejects badly construed structures such as libertarian marxism, but do not close our eyes before the reality of concrete struggles whose patrimony must not be lost. Finally, our work seeks to revalue anarchist pluralism, the vision of life and methodology of struggle which seems to us the most valid for the realisation of the future social revolution.

“Anarchismo” through analytical articles, documents and book reviews, carried forward in the revolutionary movement a projectual discourse orientated towards permanent conflictuality, autonomous action and attack. Small actions of attack, spread throughout the territory, represented and continue to represent today, a proposal of method for who, pushed by a situation of oppression and illbeing, decides autonomously to insurge refusing to delegate the practical realisation of this need to any authoritarian, institutional or supposedly revolutionary structure.

Abbiamo deciso la pubblicazione di questo scritto perché lo riteniamo di grande importanza e utilità, non tanto per i problemi che risolve e le indicazioni che fornisce – altri scritti del genere sono molto più documentati e conclusivi – quanto per ciò che propone, per le discussioni che mette sul tappeto, per ciò che lascia aperto alla riflessione e al dubbio. Non siamo davanti al solito scritto dovuto ad uno o più tecnici della guerriglia, in cui si calano nella dimensione politica di un gruppo ristretto le conoscenze tecniche di chi ha fatto della piccola guerra il proprio mestiere. Siamo davanti allo sforzo di alcuni compagni anarchici, con una esperienza pratica di guerriglia, i quali si sono posti il problema di come gli anarchici possono affrontare i mille ostacoli di uno scontro armato, senza con ciò cadere da un lato in una facile mentalità autoritaria che sembra in grado di risolvere ogni contraddizione, e, dall’altro, in una altrettanto facile fede nell’improvvisazione e nella virtù taumaturgica dei principi anarchici. Ecco perché alcune affermazioni contenute in questo scritto faranno storcere il muso a molti compagni. Basta ricordare qui quella riguardante la necessità dell’unità di comando per rendersi conto dell’effettiva portata di ciò che questo scritto discute e affronta.
